Engineering work flow requires quick visual assessments of results and modification of structural models until a satisfactory solution is achieved. Hence, as part of the time saving ideas for reviewing structural models, May I suggest that the Workspace user profile feature be included in the View Management functionality in STAAD.
While working on a variety structural models. I find it very time efficient to create multiple views and arrange these views in a manner such that it is quick and easy to visualize Moments , Shear forces and deflections on the various parts of the structure. "Please see attached picture".
However, what appears not to be time efficient is the repetitive creation of views for every structural models and resizing these views to fit within the workspace without the option of saving the workspace view settings. This is particularly obvious & required while working with structures containing plate elements and reviewing contours of Mx, My, Mxy, SQx, SQy, etc for specific components of a structure. It would be very helpful if this Workspace arrangement ( or similar) of various views (or call it viewports) could be saved to a " created user profile" under the View management tab in STAAD Pro.
Similarly Other Engineers may create "view-ports" for different "Floor levels" of a multi-story structure while maintaining a separate "whole structure view" for Modeling & Analysis purposes. Once created, the workspace arrangement can be saved to a defined user profile and later re-used on the same structure if that structure needs to be re-analyzed for changes in load/ geometry or for value engineering purposes or other similar STAAD files .
This feature would help engineers to rapidly visualize the structural response at those floor levels ( or to review a particular "element or member of interest" that has been isolated within that viewport) . In addition, this feature would reduce the time required for assessing the structural response of whole model while also keeping "in view" the performance of specific critical structural members/elements fairly quickly and efficiently .
Note that softwares like "Bluebeam" and "AutoCAD" have similar feature such as "a saved user profiles" where any user is able to create a preferred workspace profile settings.
If included in the next or future STAAD updates, this feature would certainly help speed up engineering workflows, structural assessments of specific members & elements and aid in quick decision making.
Thanks
Thank you for creating this idea. However, we do provide a method for you to create your own views and chose what details to display in them with a macro using OpenSTAAD. I would agree however, we could add additional functions to save the current view and open saved views.
