Star section or similar section modeled in Shape editor converts it into a SLENDER section and so staad does not design such sections for moment. Numerous times we use such builtup sections, it would be helpful if staad does design for these sections too.
Numerous times, I use STAR columns or crossed columns (2 I beams connected orthogonally). It's sectional properties (ex, Moment of Inertia, Section Modulus, Radius of gyration is high), but when the same section is modelled in SHAPE EDITOR, it creates an equivalent I section, but the problem is that this I section is shown as SLENDER, hence drastically reducing the strength of this section. In reality, STAR column is not SLENDER. Thus, design of this section is not done correctly in staad.
Thank you for posting this idea. However, can you provide a little more detail on the situation you are thinking of. As you can imagine, the beauty of a module like Shape Editor is that it can be used to to define almost any shape you can imagine from any material or combination of materials. Many shapes that can be defined in Shape Editor are not supported by the design codes. Can you share a sample of the profile in Shape Editor, and the design code that you are looking to have STAAD.Pro solve.
